Bookends Bookstore

With more than 35,000 secondhand volumes and two black cats, Jane and Austen, Bookends is a browsers' shop located in the village of Florence, 2.5 miles west of downtown Northampton, Massachusetts, which is about 20 minutes north of Springfield.

Our shop offers selections from the expected to the unexpected, organized into over 50 sections, including children's, mysteries, cookery, history, sci-fi, philosophy, literature, art, biography, mythology, religion, and a select group of rare books. We also have a sizeable collection of foreign language books, videos and DVDs.

In recent years, the Northampton area has become a center for the book arts and boasts, in addition to binders, papermakers, book-designers, writers, editors and illustrators, a half-dozen or more bookshops as well as prominent catalogue dealers and book auctions at the Hotel Northampton.

Bookends is open-with the exception of major holidays-Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We are always buying books, and the shop's owner, Grey Angell (who purchased Bookends several years ago from its original owner, Ed Shanahan) will make house calls if customers have more books than can easily be transported to the store.

When you visit Bookends for the first time, look for the Miss Florence Diner (a destination in itself). Turn left (almost immediately) at the next traffic light. Bookends is on your right about two-thirds of the way down the block. You can't miss the huge "BOOKS" sign over the front entrance.
